Hey, my name is Jay. Well, technically, that’s not my real name — my real name is Jia Wei. My friends call me by my Chinese name, but when I’m meeting new people, “Jay” just works.
Having a Chinese name is tough. People who are non-Chinese find it hard to pronounce them. Some Chinese have English names on top of their Chinese names given to them by their parents when they were born, but I didn’t have one. It all started during a trip to Melbourne in 2023 with my partner, where the locals just had great trouble getting our names right.
It was tiring to keep correcting my name. Jay was born right there. Because the first letter of my given name was J and anyone, literally knows how to spell Jay. Only one way to spell it, no room for confusion. Easy to pronounce, spell and remember. This became my nickname ever since.
A little bit about me
I thought I'd introduce myself for the first issue of Update Night to kickstart this newsletter.
I'm an entrepreneur, a student, a part-time employee, a dream chaser, a content creator, and everything else in between. What am I actually.. a superhuman? I haven't figured that out yet. All I know is I want to create things that have an impact on the world. I’m someone who doesn’t sit still. And I have always been innovating since I was 15, sometimes building something brand new, other times improving things that could be better.
"Creating is my superpower", as X Wrapped 2024 says.
I ran a micro startup when I was 15. I launched it to 470k users. It was an incredible feat. I believe that alone created a revolution in the community that it was in. That experience didn’t just show me what I was capable of — it made me realize what I wanted to do with my life: create things that matter.
I wanted to do more of this. I want to make real changes. I’m not someone who sits around talking about ideas forever. If something seems doable, I jump in, figure it out, and get things moving.
The backstory
I'm always ahead of the tech and business trends; business trends not so much, but I know a lot on what's happening in tech.
I always come across the coolest things on the Internet, somehow. I read X, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, the news every single day and there's always something cool and groundbreaking to share with others. At the end of last year, I thought this could be what I am good at; the magnifying glass to finding all these latest tools and news buried in the depths of big headlines. This was one of my superpowers.
Then one day this thought just flashed my mind. What if I created one space where anyone could share and discover the coolest stuff together?
A place where I could easily drop and share what I find on the Internet with others, and I could build a community around it — a home for everyone to pitch in their coolest finds. I was already sharing these finds with my friends on messaging apps. I could just expand this further by making a big chat group with a lot of people inside, so I could reach as many people as possible with just one paste of a link. This was where Division Null ∅ was born.
I built something good
Division Null ∅ is a Discord community for sharing and discovering the latest tech news and resources. This went from idea to reality in less than a day. I've got everything setup so fast, I couldn't believe it. And I would say it was a successful launch; I shared around with people I know, my friends, colleagues, blasted on my socials and get everyone in tech to join this revolution. We are already at 80 members today, incredible.
It wasn't like any of the tool or product directories where people list their products for a small fee. In fact, it's 100% completely free. It's not a website where someone has to manually push an update, but a chat group. A highly versatile place where anyone could share their finds. There was a sense of community, an outlet for interaction for each find, and most importantly it was easily accessible to everyone.
It’s not just another directory; it’s a living, breathing chatroom where everything is happening in real-time. You could see the time I send each message. The latest is always in the recent chat messages of each channel. You're always up to date with the latest news in the tech community.
So if this sounds like something you're interested in, feel free to hop in! And even if you don't have anything to share yet, it's still free to join and explore around!
The start of something big
Update Night, the newsletter you are reading right now will be similar to what Division Null is at its core but we go a little more in depth and give my views and insights on each item.
This newsletter is for anyone who wants to stay ahead of the game. Whether you’re building a startup, working in tech, or just want to know what’s coming next, this will give you an edge.
And this is my promise to you — when you subscribe to this newsletter, you will receive a weekly roundup of that week's under covered stories that other people don't cover, right inside your inbox — for free. And of course, I will also include some of the big headlines that are important so you don't miss out. This includes, the latest products, open source software, tools, resources, content, everything you need to stay ahead of this game.
Other times, you will receive another issue on real stories of my experiences building a tech startup. I personally like this one more, because you will get to go behind the scenes of what it takes to build a business. And hopefully, I will inspire you to start your own creation, business, innovative idea one day.
Essentially, this newsletter will cover everything tech and business; the foundation of the Top 500 companies in the world today and in the future.
You won't miss out anything because of Update Night. Just by dropping your email address here, you get free weekly tech and business news at your convenience. This alone gets you ahead of others, knowing the latest before everyone hops on the bandwagon because nobody else covers this kind of stuff. When you know things others don't, you are already ahead.
Knowledge is a superpower, the more you know, the more competitive advantage you have. And I can't believe I am saying this — it's free to join. I can't even believe myself that I am providing so much value for free. I am practically giving you something I can charge $10 / month for, completely free here. All this knowledge I would have kept to myself over the years, is now ungated, condensed all in an easy to consume format.
A bigger vision
At the end of June last year, I decided to start, or rather continue YouTube. I released weekly content on my channel for a few months. It was some tech, some business while most travel vlogs.
As much as the original intent of the channel was to cover tech content, this drifted away with travel vlogs. But I will be back on track this year. The issues you see here will also be curated in a long form content format on my YouTube channel. If you’re not into reading newsletters, you can catch similar content on my channel in a more visual format.
Personally, I like both. I’ve got big plans for Update Night, Division Null ∅, and my YouTube channel, and I’d love for you to be part of it all.
Join me at the starting line
And that's it! I'm starting something big, and hopefully revolutionary to make an impact on this world; but more importantly providing value to the readers, and viewers of my channel.
The very first issue of this week's tech news has already been released.
Go ahead and read it now.
I'll be sharing more on the real reasons why I decided to start a newsletter in the upcoming issues.
But hey, if you're still here, I am announcing something big on the first of the next month; that's February 1st. Mark the date on your calendar. It will be a big announcement.
Let’s make this something big.
Cheers,
Jay
